No one is in control of your happiness but you; therefore, you have the power to change anything about yourself or your life that you want to change. - Barbara de Angelis

Chat Point

Venue: Chat Point.

So, it was during the holiday that I decided to try this newly open cafe or restaurant at Malim. I found out about this place through a friend and he told me that the taste of the food there is okay and the price is quite reasonable. I brought a few of my buddies together with me to try this place out. It has a nice design on the inner of the shop while on the outside, they place wooden tables and chairs. So, basically you can choose to sit inside or in the open air. We decided to sit inside because one of my friend said that there were lots of mosquitoes at the open air sitting area.

Well, for this post I do not have much photos on the shop because my phone battery was running out so I decided to save them for the foods. Anyway, I'll just cut the chase and go straight to the food that they offer. Basically they offer both western and eastern food but I feel that their choices of western foods are too little. For the drinks, they serve fruit juices, pudding deserts, and all the other usual drinks.

Pork Chop

I ordered a pork chop as my main course and for my drinks, I ordered a mixture of 6 or 7 types (I can't remember, sorry) of fruit juices. I can't remember what's the name of the drink but it is expensive to me because it taste more like mango juice than a mixture of all the fruit juices because mango taste is more 'dominant' in a way that it cover away all the other juices taste. So if you want to order fruit juice, I would recommend you just order the normal fruit juice without any mixing. It will be a lot cheaper. The pork chop tasted okay but there's nothing special about the taste and to me it is overpriced. It costed me RM 18.00. I can easily get cheaper pork chop at other restaurants. I don't know is it because the ingredient that they use to make the pork chop sauce causes the price to be that but seriously it is overprice.

The fruit juice
My other friends all ordered their eastern food and their comment on the food was it tasted normal only. They feel that their food price are also  a little slightly overpriced.

Fried Rice

Wan Tan hor.

Rating: 6/10

Reviews: This cafe is suitable for having a drink and the foods are not bad in terms of taste but the price are overpriced. Hopefully they will improve and bring down the prices a little bit. A newly open restaurant must be given time to improve itself. By the way, this shop is non-halal as they serve pork.

Location: Chat Point is situated beside Big Mouth Cafe(Malim jaya branch). I do not know what's that area name but it's the new road which connects to the malim roundabout and there are 2 large hawker center on the left and right respectively. As you come down from the bridge, the first junction, you turn right and go straight. You should be able to spot the cafe. You can go to their facebook page to check out the location and also others info that you might want to know. Thank You.

Yeast Pastry House.

Venue: Yeast Pastry House.

This time my post will be a little bit different because usually I only post about restaurant or cafe but this time around, I'm going to post about a pastry shop. This pastry shop just opened a few months ago and it has become well known among Malaccan due to it's delicious pastries and cakes. The pastries and cakes sold there are kind of special compare to those pastries that other pastry shop sell. This is one of the main reason it became popular so fast but most important is the delicious taste. I heard story from my friend that the owner of this pastry shop went to Taiwan to study pastries making for several years before returning here to open his own business.

Green Tea Cake

European cheese cake

Strawberry Mochi

American cheese cake

  • All the pastries and cakes are nice but I recommend it's european cheese cake. It's nicer compare to american cheese cake.

Overall: 8/10

Review: The price of the pastries and cake maybe a little overprice but no one is complaining if it is delicious. A definitely must visit for those pastries and cake lovers.

Location: It is situated at the new shop lot at Kota Laksamana and it is just beside Casa De Cafe.

The Big Mouth [RE-RATED]

Venue: The Big Mouth.

I had posted about this restaurant about a month ago and this time I revisited the restaurant to see whether they have any changes there. The first thing that I realize was that they had changed their menu to a more attractive and presentable one.

While I was there, I tried a few of their food and beverages too and I found out that their chef's specialties are delicious.

Aromatic Grilled Chicken Skewer

  • If you are a tomato puree and grilled chicken, this is the dish for you. It is a great side dish.

Fish burger

  • The fish burger taste good. The fish fillet has more meat than flour~ Nice.

Cheesy Wedges

  • The cheesy wedges tasted okay and the cheese sauce that they put on the wedges taste special and not like normal cheese cream. The desserts were good too. I had always wanted to try their desserts since the first time I went there and finally I had the chance to do so. I couldn't remember what's the name of the desserts but they are nice. My friend told me their Apple Streussals is nice too. Too bad I do not have a photo of it here.

Char Grilled spicy Portugal Chicken

Monkey Mocha

  • Char grilled spicy portugal chicken and monkey mocha are by far the best food and beverage I had there. It's highly recommended by me.

Overall: 8/10

Review: If they keep up the quality of the food and environment, I definitely feel that this restaurant can be one of a good place to dine in and I will definitely return for more of their chef specialties.

Location: The Big Mouth restaurant is situated behind Sinar College. After you drive past Amigo restaurant, you will see it not long after that.

Tao Yuen Dim Sum Restaurant

Venue: Tao Yuen Dim Sum

Tao Yuen dim sum is very well known for it's 'Liu Sha Bao'  which is a bun  or more precisely 'bao' in chinese which has cream (I am not sure what's the exact word for that) made of salted egg yolk in it. The cream is just like those cream of corn 'bao' which we often eat. The 'liu sha bao' taste very good and special as it's my first time having such a 'bao' but my friend told me there are many other places selling this kind of 'bao' but just that Tao Yuen is more famous.

The yellow cream is 'Liu sha bao' while the purplish cream is the Yam 'bao'

I guess the origin of the name of the 'bao' came from the way the cream of the 'bao' tasted and felt in our mouth. In chinese, Firstly,'Liu' means flow literally which you can see when you have your first bite on the 'bao' and the cream starts to flow out of the 'bao' like some kind of juice and thus, my advice is do not take too big of a bite on the 'bao' or else the cream will be everywhere and will look messy. Secondly, 'sha' in chinese means sand. You will experience as if there are fine sand in your mouth due to the salted egg yolk cream. So that's my guess of the name of the 'bao' but that's just my guess, for the original story you need to ask the owner himself.  Other than 'liu sha bao' there is also another 'bao' which is similar to the previous but the cream is made of yam this time. I do not know the name of this 'bao' but the smell of the cream is very nice and it taste as good as the previous 'bao' that I introduced too.

For the normal dim sum dish, they tasted okay but there's nothing special about them. Just like normal dim sum dishes that you can eat at other dim sum shop. So my recommendation is go to the shop to eat the  'liu sha bao' and the Yam 'bao' but you can also order the dim sum dishes if you like as they are not bad.

Overall: 8/10

Review: The reason I gave 8/10 for this shop is mainly because of the two 'bao' that I mentioned earlier but another reason is because of this shop environment. Although it is a dim sum shop, it does not feel so cramp and noisy although there are many customers there. Those who often dine in dim sum restaurant will know what I mean. You can visit their website at www.taoyuen.com.my to find out more about their food.

Location: It's hard to explain the location by words because you cannot see the shop by the main road. it's like in the middle of a housing area. For those of you who know where is Taman Peringgit Jaya, then you should know there is a Petronas petrol station in that area. Tao yuen dim sum restaurant is just situated near there. I will leave their shop address here : 377, Jalan Melor 1, Taman Peringgit Jaya,75400, Melaka. The map to their restaurant is available at their website which I mentioned above.

Pangkalama

Venue: Restaurant Pangkalama

Restoran Pangkalama, a shop with many years of history in selling their famous 'Hee kiao mee'. Their old shop was situated near Putra hospital and I never eat at their old shop before because I do not know about them until after they moved to this new shop lot. To me, it's a clever move because now, their shop is very near to town area and more people will know their shop. Other than that, their new shop also have a lot of car parks compare to the area around their old shop which is very hard to find parking. This shop is NON-HALAL as they do serve pork and pork lard.

Upon ordering from the waiter, you will be ask to choose from 'mee', 'mee hoon' and 'kuey teow' for your 'hee kiao mee'. I don't remember the price of the mee well but it should be from RM3.50 - RM4.50 per bowl depending on what size you order. Either Big or small.

Other than hee kiao mee they also sell those ingredients which you can eat together with your mee which is like 'yong tau foo'. They sell fish ball, fish paste, dumplings (fish, prawn and pork),vegetables and etc. Each of those ingredients will cause you RM0.70 to RM1.00 but my advice is do not take so much of the ingredients without calculating how much you had taken because your meal will become very expensive later and also when you just call the mee, inside they will give you quite a number of fish balls and fish paste.

Their normal fish ball and dumplings is a must try if you plan to take the ingredients. You have to self service to take the pork lard and chili sauce. Put some pork lards into your mee and soup, it will taste nicer.

There is nothing special about their drinks because they sell all those ordinary drinks that you can find outside. I ordered their longan drink and it tasted normal to me.

Overall: 8/10

Review: Pangkalama is a nice place to eat 'Hee Kiao mee' if it is one of ur favourite food but for the price, as I said earlier, you must control how much ingredients you take if you don't want it to be too expensive or over budget.

Location: It is situated at the new shop lot at Kota Laksamana and you can see it from the road side. It is situated as the same row as Casa de Cafe.

Calanthe Art Cafe: The 13 States Coffee

Venue: Calanthe Art Cafe

Not only the name of this cafe is special but it's whole theme is special. Calanthe Art Cafe is situated at Jonker Walk area. The cafe will give you a vintage feel as you step in because all the furniture and decorations are vintage items or antique. The building of the cafe also has vintage feels as those buildings around Jonker Walk had existed since the time of British ruling in Malacca. So, the environment is perfect.

Ice Blended Johor Coffee

1 of the 13 states coffee (Hot)

Another special thing about this cafe is that they serve coffee. Well, not just coffee but all the coffee from all over Malaysia. They have all different coffee powders for the different states in Malaysia. They call it the 13 states coffee. You can order Johor coffee, Malacca coffee, Sarawak coffee, Penang coffee and so on. My recommendation is to try the Johor coffee as I feel is the best out of the 13. Other than that, I also recommend you to drink them cold. They do not taste as good if you order them hot. You can mix 2 states coffee into one cup but I do not recommend you to do so because you cannot really taste the coffee taste of each state that way. The taste will be mixed up. You can even choose which state coffee you want and ask them to make ice blended coffee for you. Inside the ice blended coffee they will put in coffee jelly and it taste really good. So far, Johor Ice blended coffee is the best for me.

Above are all photos of some of the interesting decorations or antique that I snap when I dine at there. As you can see, those decorations are really vintage. When I visited it for the first time, they were offering a seasonal dish which was the Fried Durian. I had ate fried jack fruit before but not Durian for sure. So I decided to gave it a try and it tasted good. It is seasonal dish so you have to visit their Facebook group to see what special dish that they are offering to keep up to date.

Fried Durian

While at therem there are two dishes that you must try. The first is the Calanthe Laksa and the second is the Asam Pedas. Thier laksa was rated top 50 in Malaysia and I personally recommend it as I love it very much. the laksa is not penang laksa type of soup but is the Curry laksa type. You can order 'mee', 'kuey teow' or 'mee hoon' laksa but I will tell you this. 'Mee hoon' is the best to make curry laksa because they will like kind of absorb the curry more and you can taste it well. On the other hand, their asam pedas is said to be one of the best in Malacca. I know another shop in Malacca that is said to have the best asam pedas but Calanthe Art Cafe asam pedas is good too. The asam pedas is served with a plate of rice with salted egg, belacan and vege. They only sell 'Asam Pedas' on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Double Chocolate

They do sell other drinks other than the 13 states coffee. For example I drank this chocolate drink during my second visit there. It taste good. You also can buy back those 13 states coffee powder which will cost you RM 2 per pack. I was told that many tourist and local customers praise their drinks and food for their good taste and  quality. So, don't be surprise if you see there are many tourist there or you have to wait for your seat during the weekend.

Overall: 10/10

Review: Calanthe Art Cafe is the best cafe that I had dine in up to now in terms of food, drinks, service and environment. Although sometimes when you sit inside the cafe you may feel a little warm due to lack of air flow but I think that is just a small problem that will not stop me from enjoying their food and drinks. Their waiters serve with a smile too and have very good customer service. I had introduced this cafe to several friends and all of them said this cafe is good. I definitely recommend this cafe to all of you who is reading this and I can tell you that the price of the food and drinks are reasonable.

Location: Calanthe Art Cafe is situated at Jonker Street. It is at the same alley as where A Famosa Chicken Rice shop is situated.
