Calanthe Art Cafe: The 13 States Coffee

Venue: Calanthe Art Cafe

Not only the name of this cafe is special but it's whole theme is special. Calanthe Art Cafe is situated at Jonker Walk area. The cafe will give you a vintage feel as you step in because all the furniture and decorations are vintage items or antique. The building of the cafe also has vintage feels as those buildings around Jonker Walk had existed since the time of British ruling in Malacca. So, the environment is perfect.

Ice Blended Johor Coffee

1 of the 13 states coffee (Hot)

Another special thing about this cafe is that they serve coffee. Well, not just coffee but all the coffee from all over Malaysia. They have all different coffee powders for the different states in Malaysia. They call it the 13 states coffee. You can order Johor coffee, Malacca coffee, Sarawak coffee, Penang coffee and so on. My recommendation is to try the Johor coffee as I feel is the best out of the 13. Other than that, I also recommend you to drink them cold. They do not taste as good if you order them hot. You can mix 2 states coffee into one cup but I do not recommend you to do so because you cannot really taste the coffee taste of each state that way. The taste will be mixed up. You can even choose which state coffee you want and ask them to make ice blended coffee for you. Inside the ice blended coffee they will put in coffee jelly and it taste really good. So far, Johor Ice blended coffee is the best for me.

Above are all photos of some of the interesting decorations or antique that I snap when I dine at there. As you can see, those decorations are really vintage. When I visited it for the first time, they were offering a seasonal dish which was the Fried Durian. I had ate fried jack fruit before but not Durian for sure. So I decided to gave it a try and it tasted good. It is seasonal dish so you have to visit their Facebook group to see what special dish that they are offering to keep up to date.

While at therem there are two dishes that you must try. The first is the Calanthe Laksa and the second is the Asam Pedas. Thier laksa was rated top 50 in Malaysia and I personally recommend it as I love it very much. the laksa is not penang laksa type of soup but is the Curry laksa type. You can order 'mee', 'kuey teow' or 'mee hoon' laksa but I will tell you this. 'Mee hoon' is the best to make curry laksa because they will like kind of absorb the curry more and you can taste it well. On the other hand, their asam pedas is said to be one of the best in Malacca. I know another shop in Malacca that is said to have the best asam pedas but Calanthe Art Cafe asam pedas is good too. The asam pedas is served with a plate of rice with salted egg, belacan and vege. They only sell 'Asam Pedas' on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Double Chocolate

They do sell other drinks other than the 13 states coffee. For example I drank this chocolate drink during my second visit there. It taste good. You also can buy back those 13 states coffee powder which will cost you RM 2 per pack. I was told that many tourist and local customers praise their drinks and food for their good taste and  quality. So, don't be surprise if you see there are many tourist there or you have to wait for your seat during the weekend.

Overall: 10/10

Review: Calanthe Art Cafe is the best cafe that I had dine in up to now in terms of food, drinks, service and environment. Although sometimes when you sit inside the cafe you may feel a little warm due to lack of air flow but I think that is just a small problem that will not stop me from enjoying their food and drinks. Their waiters serve with a smile too and have very good customer service. I had introduced this cafe to several friends and all of them said this cafe is good. I definitely recommend this cafe to all of you who is reading this and I can tell you that the price of the food and drinks are reasonable.

Location: Calanthe Art Cafe is situated at Jonker Street. It is at the same alley as where A Famosa Chicken Rice shop is situated.

Sunset Bistro

Venue: Sunset Bistro

  • In the past Klebang beach is a picnic spot or a spot for families to hang out and enjoy the sea breeze during the weekend but then the sea water starts to cause erosion to the beach which causes the Government to build wall and put big rock at the seaside to stop the erosion, fearing it may get too near to the main road. Since then the beach has been empty. Only those operating food stalls survived the matter. However, a few years ago the Government started a project to reclaim land from the sea to rebuild back the good old Klebang beach plus to make a place so called the "Malacca Gold Coast".  Last year, the project completed and we can see the beautiful beach of Klebang once again plus 'Dataran 1 Malaysia' which is just an empty land or complex to held big function or event. The place has a huge '1' sign on it. Although the project is not fully complete but one bistro had opened at there beside the beach few months ago. The name of this bistro is Sunset Bistro.

  • This is bistro as I mentioned earlier is situated at seaside. You can feel the sea breeze and also take a walk by the side of the sea while waiting for your food to be serve. They open start from 5P.M until 2A.M for weekdays and Sunday. They open until 3A.M for Friday and Saturday. They are close on Monday.

  • The menu looks attractive enough but those cocktails shown in the menu are not sold there. This is because they intend to sell cocktails in the beginning but they did not get the license to sell them but they do sell beer. The environment there is enjoyable, especially when the sea breeze starts to blow. That kind of environment with a fresh coconut as your drink? That would be perfect.

Spaghetti Carbonara

Junior Burger

  • I ordered a chocolate drink which taste really good as it has a chocolate ice cream on the top double the taste. For my food, I ordered a carbonara and also a Junior burger. The Carbonara tasted good but it's milky and cheesy because of the white sauce. My advice is if you are not so into cheesy or milky stuff, do not order this dish because you will feel that you are full just half way through your meal because of the sauce. That's what happened to one of my friend. On the other hand, the junior burger tasted good too just that they need to use better bread as it is kind off hard. Secondly, the patty of the burger is made by themselves and it tasted good because they did not overcook the beef patty. This will ensure there are some 'juice' inside the meat. They do sell chicken patty burger too but what I want to complain about is that they have different size burger patty which will cost you a different price. My friend ordered a bigger size patty than mine as mine is the smallest in the menu but when we compare, the patty of the burger had almost the same size. My friend was grumbling about it as the price was almost double mine. I hope they can set the standard for their patty size to please the customers.

                Grilled Chicken Chop

        Fish And Chips

       Stuffed Chicken Breast

  • The stuffed chicken breast is nice. It's just like gordon blue but inside is not ham and cheese but some other stuffing. The sauce that they pour on the chicken taste good.

       Sausage with Chili
(To me this this is plain simple and not worth ordering. You can even cook it yourself at home. It's just sausage with chili sauce. That's what it taste like.)

      Deep Fried Potato Skin
(These potatoes are different from those at Season Five. The potato at Sunset Bistro has a better taste compare to the ones at Season Five but S.F uses American Potatoes while the bistro uses normal potatoes.)

            Onion Rings

              Grilled Lamb

  • I ordered grilled lamb on my second visit there. It taste very good. I recommend this if you are lamb meat lover.

Overall: 8/10
